Coordinate Motion

Or is it “Coordinated Motion”? The latter makes more sense but the former seems to be the accepted term for describing burr-like puzzles whose assembly requires two or more pieces to be moved simultaneously and continuously. I guess I’ll just go with the flow and call them “coordinate motion puzzles.” One of the most beautifully made puzzles I’ve ever come across, coordinate motion or otherwise, is the machined aluminum / joined wood / metal 3D […]

Other People’s Puzzles

Now and then I come across a puzzle which I find deeply satisfying in its balance of complexity and attractiveness. If it’s not too daunting an undertaking I’ll create a CAD design with the aim of 3D printing it. I get a lot of enjoyment from the reverse-engineering process and the insight it gives me into the designer’s mind. As I blogged about in my “Some Fun DIY Puzzles” post, I modeled Dic Sonneveld’s “4 […]

New Sliding Block Puzzle (Model #055)

I’m just back from IPP38 and this year I participated in the Puzzle Exchange. I’m still kind of reeling at the fact that I came home with two boxes stuffed with great puzzles. Seventy-eight of us swapped puzzles with each other and there are some truly beautiful and ingenious puzzles in there. My exchange puzzle was a sliding block puzzle which is a new genre for me. Here’s a picture of it: One thing that’s […]

They said it couldn’t be done! They said it would cost millions of lives! They said I was crazy to try! Well, I showed them! Mwa-ha-ha-ha! Model #360 is finally done: And here’s a picture of the top showing the logo with the blue ink that takes me forever to add: It’s pretty hefty by the way, 11 1/2 ounces (325 grams). Stewart Coffin’s #167 “Cruiser”

As I mentioned in my October post, I’ve been having fun making puzzles using designs I found on the web and one of them is Stewart Coffin’s 2D packing puzzle, #167, a.k.a. “Cruiser”. I’ve shown it to friends and family and it’s been a big hit so I reached out to Stewart about selling them. We exchanged some emails and met so I could show him the finished product: He agreed! I have his permission […]

Model #808 is Done!

Surf’s up! Dinner is served! Lift-off! Well, the day has finally arrived and Model #808 is now available for purchase. There are only 106 of them – that’s all I made – so if you’re interested please head over to my Etsy store. And here it is: I have to say, everything about this process took longer than I expected so it’s a great relief to have at last reached the finish line. I never […]

Storefront debut!

I’ve taken another important (albeit microscopic) step towards complete puzzle industry domination: I have opened an Etsy store. You can find it here. I have some extra square-to-pentagon and square-to-hexagon puzzles so if you want one, they’re a lot easier to obtain now. One thing that has surprised me is how much people like the way these puzzles look and feel. I keep hearing I should sell them as dining room or living room accessories […]

My Puzzle Selling Debut!

I have to say I am very impressed with Henry Dudeney and his dissection puzzles, specifically his Triangle dissection and his Greek Cross dissection. I thought they might look cool in colored acrylic so I made a bunch and they are now available at Eureka Puzzles and LittleBits Toys. Pictures and more information are available here on my Items for Sale page.
