ReCube ReVisited

Last February I blogged about Viktor Genel’s “ReCube” puzzle and the fun I had making cubical and spherical versions of it. Then, last August, I got to talking to George Bell about coordinate motion puzzles generally and about ReCube in particular. After some emails back and forth on how to model the spherical version in OpenSCAD, I realized I had omitted an internal vertex and the faces it anchors. I hate it when that happens.

So I revised the cubical and spherical versions on my Etsy and Shapeways stores and also added a third version. Behold:

As you can see, I added grooves that camouflage the seams between the pieces – I think it turned out pretty well. Here are some other shots:

In case you’re curious, here are pictures of the revised spherical version:

George and I have pretty much convinced ourselves this is the same shape used in the Venn puzzle:

And while I’m at it, here are the new pictures for the dimpled cube version:

In other news, I continue to refine three new designs that I will likely produce in machined aluminum. The mechanisms are sneaky but I hope not overly so.
